"You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret, all the best people are."
- Alice in Wonderland
Mad as a Hatter
During our travels we often hear people referrer to us the the Mad Hatters. They walk into our booth, take a look around at all the different unique styles of hats and say "These must be the mad hatter top hats!" We take this as a compliment!
The phrase "mad as a hatter" comes from the Victorian era, when fashion and hat making was the foreground of our steampunk culture. In 18th and 19th century mercury was used in the production of felt, which was used in the making of hats.
Mercury poisoning was the result of long term use of mercury products. The symptoms of this sickness included slurred speech, tremors, stumbling, and, in extreme cases, hallucinations. Today, "mad as a hatter" refers to our friends and family, much like Alice to the Hatter, in that we are all completely off our rockers and stark raving mad!
Our Mad Hatter Hats
We carry all kinds of hat styles. We have everything from fedoras and top hats to sun hats and derby hats. The best hats- my favorite hats anyways- are the mad hatter styled top hats!
